Bring your own CSS!

Home

I've received complaints that my blog isn't pretty enough.

In response, I would like to start a movement:

Bring your own CSS, gosh darn it!

Not to sound too crotchety, but I already supply the content and the structure! And you want more??

Next thing I know you'll be asking for interactivity and, god forbid, state!

See, the beautiful thing about the internet is that substance and form are totally decoupled. You can supply your own CSS (cascading style sheets for my non technical friends) and configure your client to render any web page with those style sheets!

Okay well formally, I suppose you do have to slightly edit every HTML document you receive to inject your own CSS. So it's not a client configuration option per se, which sort of kills me a bit, now that I realize this as I write.

But nonetheless, it's would not be so hard to force your client to do this for yourself.

Oh and as I write this, I realized another benefit!

If I force you to use my CSS, perhaps my choices will clash with yours! Not on a technical level, the point of CSS is to not have to worry about conflicts. But aesthetically, I mean.

Another benefit even! Perhaps this movement has actual non-humourous merit!

If we expect every website to be bare, we might actually encourage people to use their HTML tags with correct semantics and accessibility and not to just <div> all over the place.

And if you say "But @me, you're website is a perfect example of misused tags", then I invite you to educate me!

I'm being perfectly sincere here, if you think I could write my structure better, let me know and I will do so. I won't retroactively update my website but future articles will reflect your contribution.
