On Sunday, I had my second "hackathon". This time, I was joined by @ztereo and @rz! My goal was to:
@ztereo wanted to also install NixOS but was very kind enough to show me the ropes around cracking open my laptop and how to clean it.
@rz I think got caught up talking to @ztereo actually, but I think the conversation was so effervescent, that I can't really blame him.
In the end I was able to clean the laptop but there was a problem with the Windows install on the SSD and I think the fans might be broken (some bearing might be loose).
My goal is to try to fully refurbish it. So I will have to replace the fans and I'll have to reformat the SSD I reckon. I do think the SSD works since the error message was a Windows error message.
But at this point, I was satisfied. See, my brother gifted me these iFixit kits for my graduation present and they've been collecting dust till now. And now, I feel confident just ... opening up my laptop and trying to make it work.
So I didn't try to install NixOS. @ztereo tried but he didn't have enough time, because he had to catch a train. I mean, he basically gave up all his time to help me learn my way around the iFixit tools and my latop, so I'm honestly very appreciative of that.
It was a great time! If anyone else wants to join, please get in contact! I think we will basically come together in one physical location if we can, and if not, we will connect virtuall.
But I'm not trying to make this some movement. I want to take this as far as it is fun for me and my friends.
But I do think it's worthwhile! So if you have something where you've gone "I wish I could do this, but I don't have enough energy", I think this hackathon is great moment for that!
Actually, hackathon is not a great name for this sort of thing. Anyone have any suggestions?
